Welcome to my blog

Welcome to my first blog on my new website! Why have I included a blog? Is that a question you are asking?

Digitally savvy readers will know that recent Google updates tell us that “freshness” is good for websites and, regardless of the industry you are in, Google likes fresh “content”.  Read any article by digital marketers now and it’s unlikely that the term “content” won’t be mentioned, it’s the new SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) in so many ways but we’ll look at content and SEO another day. Today’s topic is “what’s a blog and why is it important for my business?”.

The term blog, as explained in detail by Wikipedia, comes from ‘web blog’ and the term ‘blog’ has been with us since 1999 when Peter Merholz, apparently off the cuff and jokingly, split the word weblog into the phrase we blog in the sidebar of his own blog Peterme.com. Soon afterwards, blog became accepted as a noun, verb and a community of bloggers subsequently proliferated.

In the travel industry the growth of travel bloggers has extended the reach of tourism and travel products, complementing traditional media and offering ‘real time’ information and reviews. The typical travel blogger is an individual but businesses, in every industry, have also embraced the marketing opportunities provided by a ‘blog’ or ‘news’ page in their website.

The online benefits apply whether you refer to your posts as a “blog” or a “news” page. The important factors are that you are keeping your website alive with fresh content and, hopefully, providing relevant reading matter to your audience of potential and existing customers. The online opportunities don’t end there, you can use other online tools to drive traffic to your website’s blog page and I’ll chat through those digital marketing gems in a future blog.
